Codeine

Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, coughing, and diarrhea. It is typically used to treat mild to moderate degrees of pain. Greater benefit may occur when combined with paracetamol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

It belongs to a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics and to a class of medications called antitussives. When it is used to treat pain, it works by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
